The key strategies cover areas like Public Education, Weed Management, Pest Management, Scientific Studies, and Restoration.
A key question is how does this work get funded? Whereas DoC build and maintain the tracks in the Reserve, WECG has to seek funding for everything else that enables the Reserve to evolve in line with our Strategic Plan.
It costs about $5 to grow and put a plant in the ground, at August 2023 there are over 74,000 that have been planted!
How many plants would you like to support growing in the Scientific Reserve?
We have adopted a 4 year rolling plan to accomplish the long term Vision of having the Reserve self perpetuating in terms of its native plants.
The whole Reserve is broken down into Zones, defined mainly by the types of weeds we have been eradicating slowly. We are only tackling about 2 Zones per annum as to do more would be too big a task for the Care Group’s members and its budget!
At June 2023 10 Zones have been almost fully planted so, with luck and foresight the major tasks should have been finished by around 2026 as there is a 3 year lead time to get a Zone and its plants ready.
Every year DoC and WECG discuss the tasks dictated by the Zone plan into discrete timed activities for the coming year. Some tasks might be done together e.g. we planted some 1300 dune plants in 2020!
We generally cut and spray weeds during the late Spring and Summer, then prepare planting zones during Autumn with planting taking place in Winter, usually 6 lots of around 500 plants at a time.
At present we go back to each plant at least once every year for 3 years to free them of weeds , but increasingly our Adopt-a-Plot scheme is picking up a lot of the plant care that is needed until plants are well established.

Over the last year the Care Group have been enhancing the area between the Nursery and the Main Track, with help from KCDC for track improvements. This is an area many visitors see when they come to visit us for any reason and we hope it is an area where we will have more facilities in years to come.
Coming from Hana Udy Place the grass track has been slightly widened and the grass knoll recently planted by the Adult Mental Health Group with flaxes. A couple of the Committee keep the car park mowed and the back fence line is developing well with a flax screen from our new neighbours at the end of Takahe Drive.
This track connects the Nursery Area to the Main Track, it is one of the few truck access routes DoC can use for path maintenance.
It has been prone to flooding over the years so KCDC were persuaded to help raise the level in early 2021 and from then on WECG has kept it clear, sprayed and mowed.
WMZ 9 ends at this point and most of this Zone has now completed its planting which has taken just over 4 years in total with over 2600 plants inserted over that time, by many different teams.
We will continue weeding here for another 3 years.
Management of our sand dune system is of vital importance - have a look at this very informative video done by Rob Cross (ex KCDC) who made it several years ago
