Commencing in November 2019 we have cleared the area below of blackberry and coarse grasses, first by weedeaters, then by 2 successive minimal spraying doses. Once the blackberry had died the area was strimmed of remaining weeds, old logs lifted out and major holes filled in. In May 2021 it was planted to have a controlled experiment of various plant enhancing treatments to 6 of our core species of native plants we regularly plant. The pH and moisture levels have been mapped on a grid across the site.
6 Zones, each containing 55 native plants of the same species, will be subject to a range of variables including for the first time gorse mulch! Regular summer watering will be applied to 50% of the plants to see what effect this has on long term growth. The results will be put into a scientific paper in 3 years time!
